For those of you who missed the chance to pre-order your comic (you know who you are) via the successful chipin campaign that finished last week, fear not! Copies of the latest comic Adam Bessie and I put together on understanding education reform in the US will be available at San Francisco’s Alternative Press Expo this weekend. It’s at the Concourse Exhibition Center in SoMa. I’ll be there with Nomi Kane at the Center for Cartoon Studies table, so be sure to stop by. In the meantime, here are some sneak peeks at the first finished proof, which I approved for printing but a few moments ago (cheers to Keness printers in SF for their appreciation of a pre-APE deadline and fine sarcasm – a requisite for printers nowadays).
Belated thanks to all of you who pre-ordered a copy of the education reform comic, which I’m delighted to say is currently at the printers, ahead of this weekend’s Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco. (It’s in the Concourse Exhbition Center in SoMA, like always). Be sure to stop by the Center for Cartoon Studies table where I’ll be both days and say hi
We were able to raise over $500 to cover the printing overheads, and copies will be shipping next week. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, check out the press release for a quick intro to the project here.
The comic has footnotes, appendices, interviews and introductory notes in addition to the full colour pages that ran on Truthout, plus a raft of resources and links you can check out for more information on the education debacle. I mean debate.
Other big news is that this week I’m launching a webcomic to chronicle my next big project, starting tomorrow. Be sure to check back in and spread the word!
Loads of news to fill you in on today – Honduran Resistance Members’ insights into the situation on the ground and the gathering momentum for the constitutional reform petition; the Dalai Lama’s talk at Stanford this morning (off to the next one this afternoon) and about to go to veteran US intelligence officer Ray McGovern’s talk at the Stanford Law School. Only at Stanford could you go from a CIA officer to the Dalai Lama via a brief stroll across campus. I’ll type it all up this evening in between the gargantuan amount of comics I have to spray paint ahead of APE this weekend.
The more observant among you will notice the addition of a subtle “support comics journalism” widget on the left-hand sidebar. If you’re a regular visitor to the site or have enjoyed what you’ve read then please help keep the site going by chipping in a few cents. Every little micropayment helps. If you’re into the big bucks, then just head to the store and you’ll get a hard copy of the comics for your hard-earned cash.
In other world news, Zelaya’s “elected” replacement Porfirio Lobo Sosa has come out magnanimously to say he’s all for putting a vote to the Honduran people for a constituent assembly: “What’s the problem?” the Presidential stand-in is alleged to have said at a press conference in Tegucigalpa on Sept 29. Only the fact that you wouldn’t even be there had Zelaya not suggested that (and been ousted for it) in the first place. More on this most unconsciously ironic volte-face/gaff and the backstory behind it here. ALSO, you’ll be thrilled to know that the latest batch of comics has been dispatched to the printers ahead of this year’s Alternative Press Expo at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Franciso on Oct 16 and 17. I’ll be there under the auspices of the Center for Cartoon Studies, so be sure to come by, say hi, and succumb to the seductive mercantile allure of owning your very own archcomix.

I’ve just got back from San Fran’s APE con, where I headed up the CCS table and co-chaired a colour workshop, as well as touting What a Whopper and my latest project – a longer version of the 3page Bash piece I did on the 1973 Chilean Coup. Thanks to those of you who stopped by – I’ll post photos forthwith. Enjoy!
I’ve just finished designing this here flyer for the Center for Cartoon Studies Colo(u)r Workshop that’ll be featuring at San Francisco’s Alternative Press Expo this year on Nov 1st and 2nd. Bit of a departure from my usual style, and a stark contrast to the 9/11 strip above – second page will go up after this weekend.
If you’re a Bay Area local, pick up and treasure your very own flyer from one of San Fran’s fine comic-selling establishments as of tomorrow, when I’ll be dropping them off all over the city.
